The FIB (officially Benicássim International Festival) is a Festival of music, pop, rock, indie, electronic and other kinds, in addition to other activities (theatre, fashion, film) held in the town of Benicássim ( province of Castellón) every year since 1995, which until 2005 was held on the first weekend of August, but due to the amount of tourists during this month it has been held since in mid-July.
The International Festival of Benicássim, also called FIB, is characterized by its eclecticism and its orientation towards the most innovative type of music compared to other Spanish music festivals which are more targeted to specific or traditional musical styles. It is also one of the most international, with its popularity at European level sufficient to attract numerous visitors from neighboring countries, particularly the UK.
The FIB, called in its beginnings the Independent Festival of Benicássim, was created by two brothers (Miguel and José Morán), with the intention of bringing together about 30 groups in the Castellón town, all within the more independent music scene which was having great success in the UK and in Spain at the time was beginning to take its first gasps of life. The main contributions to that first Festival were The Charlatans, Supergrass and the Planets, who have always been closely linked to the Festival and who have played several times. In that first FIB there was an attendance of about 8,000 people and the concerts were organized in the Velodrome of Benicássim.
The following years were again held in this building, carrying on the same philosophy as that first FIB, but with an ever growing audience participation. In 1996 electronic music was added to musical styles and in 1997 the programme of events was amplified to include a Film and Music Season. In addition to the initial three-day festival, a launch party on Thursdays and a Mondays farewell party were added. Among the groups that acted as headliners during the Festival’s years include: The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Stone Roses, Chemical Brothers, Blur or Suede and others. The third edition achieved an attendance of up to 18,000 people, which led to the decision of a change of venue for the future. In addition, this third edition will always be remembered as the FIB of the floods, as a surprisingly strong rain storm fell over Benicássim during those days and many concerts had to be suspended.
The new location, which is the same today, is on the outskirts of the city and next to the N-340 road. Its ample space has allowed them increase the camping sites as the Festival fame grew. In 1998 it was expanded with a marquee dedicated to Chill Out Music. In that edition the line- up included Primal Scream, Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, Björk and Yo La Tengo. The final attendance reached 22,000 people.
From 1998 until 2004, when it celebrated its tenth anniversary, the FIB has continued to grow in attendance and number of artists taking advantage of the great attraction the Festival has festival particularly outside Spain, especially in the UK. Among the artists who have performed at the Green Stage (this is known the main stage since Heineken joined the sponsorship of the FIB) are The Cure, Radiohead, Suede, Australian Blonde, Placebo, Oasis, The Planets, Belle & Sebastian, James, Manic Street Preachers, Pulp, Pixies, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, Wilco, Iggy and The Stooges, Nick Cave, Keane and Morrissey etc. In its tenth anniversary the artists included; Lou Reed (The Velvet Underground), Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) and Kraftwerk.
From 2004 until this year, FIB has continued to grow year after year beating attendance records up to the approximately 150,000 who participated in the 4 days of the last edition. Festival visitors take the opportunity of their visit to the area to enjoy the town of Benicassim, the city of Castellon and of course the sunny beaches close to the Festival site.
It is an event that has everything for music lovers; good music, an open and friendly atmosphere, sun and sand – a perfect combination for a good time! This year’s line-up includes; Massive Attack, Kendrick Lamarr, Muse, Disclosure, The Chemical Brothers, Major Lazer and many more!
