The Vinaròs Carnival

The Vinaròs Carnival is one of the oldest and long-standing celebrations in the Valencian Community, and it has been declared of ‘Autonomous Tourist Interest’. This year the Vinaròs Carnival will be celebrated from the 29th of January to the 8th of February. This 2016 edition will be dedicated to the world of the circus.

The Vinaròs Carnival is one of the most important of the Mediterranean and they are a spectacular profusion of colour and happiness. The fiesta is an old tradition which has references dating back to the year 1871.

Nowadays the Carnival is celebrated forty days before Lent. Twelve days before Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the different events of the Carnival which last for eleven days. There are a multitude of events, for example; the fixing of the cravats to the troupe standards, the proclamation of the queens, pyjama night, the fancy dress party, two large troupe parades which are celebrated on the last weekend, with thousands of people dancing to the rhythm of samba music. They also celebrate different cultural, sporting and gastronomy events.

Don Carnal (Mr. Carnal) is a character who year after year arrives in Vinaròs, infecting of happiness all the habitants of the city. Don Carnal is the antithesis of Doña Cuaresma (Lady Lent), the history of Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma is the representation of the fight between the culturally correct and sin. When Carnestoltes arrives, it signifies the beginning of two weeks of craziness generating an incredible and unique atmosphere. It is a period that collapses daily routine and transforms the city into an authentic party.
