The town of Benassal is quite ancient. There are deposits ranging from the Palaeolithic to the Islamic periods, as you can see by the evidence of the rock paintings of Rincón del Nando, the Iberian remains of the Corbó Castle and the Castle of Asens del Bovalar, smelting furnaces to the Masía de Forés and Islamic farms, etc.
The growth of Benassal was mainly based on agriculture, arable (hazelnuts, almonds), pig farming, textile manufacturing, commerce and emerging tourism. Farmhouses in the area reached 150 in 1877 and Benassal approached the end of the 19th century with 3000 inhabitants, its highest population. In addition, La Fuente de en Segura became a reference and a very important tourist nucleus. Industries and services include cheese processing, rabbit farming and the processing of meat products.
Among the urban elements that you can find there are the following interesting sites; the set of La Mola, a primitive nucleus of the population where you can still see a wall mural and a portal to access the site with an arch in the Arabic tradition. La Mola gives way to the old town called Els Carrerons, formed by narrow alleys with some of the oldest houses of the town. In addition, other outstanding constructions are The Refrigerator (a medieval tower where snow was conserved until the arrival of the summer), the Hermitage of San Lliborio or many buildings with modernist facades like the Hostal La Castellana, the apartments of the same name, or the Valencia Pavilions.
The water of Benassal constitutes one of the references and symbols par excellence of Benassal and the region. It is a light, mineral, medicinal water, without gas, classified as mixed bicarbonate and oligometallic and has a great therapeutic value, especially for kidney problems.
The taste and properties of the water of Benassal are unique and unalterable with the passage of time because it is packed directly from the source and is next to where the bottling plant is located. This Fuente de en Segura spring is located at 950 metres high within the boundary of Benassal.
